All Tom’s friends really are superheroes. Tom even married a superhero, the Perfectionist. But at their wedding, Perf is hypnotized by her ex-boyfriend, Hypno, to believe Tom is invisible. Nothing he does can make her see him. Six months later, the Perfectionist is sure Tom has abandoned her, so she’s moving away. With no idea Tom’s beside her, she boards a plane. Tom has until they land to make her see him.

This tenth anniversary edition adds short stories, illustrations, and a foreword to the cult classic that has been a bestseller in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden.

Review:

(Spoiler Free)

“Okay, there’s this thing you can do, a thing you can do like no other person on this planet. That makes you special, but being special ready doesn’t mean anything. You still have to get dressed in the morning. Your shoelaces still break. Your lover will still leave you if you don’t treat her right.” “Okay, there’s this thing you can do, a thing you can do like no other person on this planet. That makes you special, but being special ready doesn’t mean anything. You still have to get dressed in the morning. Your shoelaces still break. Your lover will still leave you if you don’t treat her right.”

All My Friends are Superheroes is a delightful short story that’s incredibly quirky and light but also has so many layers of depth and personality analysis that you wouldn’t see coming.  It’s a fantasy with a hint of magical realism that will make you smile throughout the whole book. It’s about a love story between a regular man who’s been turned invisible to his superhero wife, the perfectionist. The whole book is about how Tom, the main character, could make his wife see him again before it’s too late and she leaves forever.

The book is so surprisingly absurd and bizarre in a funny way I couldn’t help appreciating the author’s sense of humour. The way he describes superheroes without the flashy capes and ridiculously fictional powers, he portrays every superhero’s greatest personality as their super power making each hero unique from the rest. For example, the Perfectionist gets her power from wanting everything to be in order. The Stress Bunny absorbs all the stress from everyone around him so everyone feels calmer and more cheerful around him. The Businessman can see into people’s bank accounts. All these aren’t your typical superpower like flight and x-ray vision. There are some peculiar superheroes like the Boybender who would fall in love with someone and they’d eventually end up looking like her dad! WHAT THE BANANA??? The imagination and creativity that was put into this book was abundant and I guarantee that you will enjoy it!

Since it’s a super short book it won’t even take you more than 2-3 hours to finish it. You can read it easily without having to think too much and the characters and images will be easily seen in your mind with the help of the accurate illustrations you can find in the book.

If you manage to find a newer copy of this book you will find an additional section at the end with more of the Superheroes Andrew comes up with. Although, I do feel like most of the Superheroes could’ve been more involved in the plot to give them more weight and gain more of an identity.

Overall, I couldn’t stop smiling while reading this book and caring for poor Tom and his wife and whether they were going to have a happy ending or not. It was very different than everything I read this year and I liked the change and all the strangeness in this book. I definitely recommend this to all my dear readers as a story to read in between finishing and starting other darker books it will keep your mind entertained but at rest. In short: READ IT!

Did you read this book? Do you want to read this book? Let me know what you think of my mini review in the comments. Don’t be shy, come on!

 Happy reading!
